Upgrading is even possible right now. Just visit http://download.live.com/ and get the latest Messenger.

All Windows Live Messenger clients with versions 8.1, 8.5 or 14.0 will receive the upgrade notification. Beginning August 25, customers of Messenger 8.1 or 8.5 were prompted to upgrade their client. Customers who installed the latest Windows Live Messenger client (14.0) before August 19, 2009 will start receiving an upgrade notification in September 2009. Customers of older versions of MSN Messenger on Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 95, Windows Me or Windows 98 will not receive an upgrade notification.

We will remind you of the mandatory upgrade when it comes nearer. More information about this is available in the Messenger says blog.

So while security hole infested versions like MSN Messenger 5.0 still remain to be usable, very recent versions like 2009 QFE1 are forced to upgrade to QFE2… without ever informing us what changed between these two Messenger versions.

And what about users on 64 bit Windowx XP? After october they won’t be able to use Windows Live Messenger at all because the QFE2 installer doesn’t allow them to use it (even though there is no reason for it): http://messengergeek.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!E3785B1281BBDA1!3406.entry

Messenger team, I like your product, but please get your stuff together:
* Inform us what changed between Messenger builds. It doesn’t have to be a detailed changelog, but at least tell something.
* Don’t block 64 bit XP users while you have no reason to, you made this mistake multiple times now.
* Quit claiming blocking versions of less than a year old if for safety while you still allow ancient MSN Messenger versions to sign in.

Microsoft, you need to hold off on “forcing” implementation of WL as the blogs here (and many others) show that there are numerous bugs (reproducible ones, I might add) that are forcing people to either deal with them or dump your product entirely. Fix the bugs and then work out a phased implementation.

MAD

I’m angry that i am being forced to update, i do not like the look, or the way Windows Live 8.5 + looks, and i am happy staying with WL 8. I would rather not use WL at all then have to upgrade.

I want to be able to stay with what i have. I WILL NOT be upgrading, and i am VERY disappointed in this.

At work I have to use Windows Server 2003 which is also left out in the cold with the new version, along with 64-bit XP.

And, even on XP, version 14 doesn’t remain connected when behind a firewall. It will login the first time you use a passport but after you log off it will keep disconnecting as soon as the login is completed. So I can’t even use the new version on my laptop while at work or with the VPN connected.

A number of other people in my office have switched to Trillian and I’ve been holding off until now since I’ve been able to keep Messenger 8.1 working on Windows Server 2003. Today 8.1 has cut me off completely so looks like it’s time to make the switch. Bye-bye Live Messenger, it was nice knowing you.

Ale

After installed it i cant use Chrome!!!! I want use my 8.1 that is perfect…..

Nancy

I cannot install new version of Windows live Messenger—-Getting problem # OX80004004. I am VERY disappointed because I can no longer use Messenger Live to stay in touch with family and friends.

New live messenger 2009 looks like shit! I hate that fucking anti aliasing and cannot turn that off anywhere! Besides it makes scrolling through my contact list DEAD SLOW! You imbeciles. And dream on me upgrading to 2009! It won’t happen. It would have happened if you didn’t totally fuck up the looks of msn or FORCED that Anti-Aliasing. Later I read more about that “forcing to upgrade” stuff and what turned out – user’s privacy is no more as msn is no longer a stand alone program.

ludwig

all my friends names are gone and new messenger say i do not have any friend added

TexMex

Looks like the WLM has given up on enforcing the version checks. I got fed up with with their WLM 9 continuously disconnecting. Uninstalled, and reinstalled Build 8.5.1302.1018 and now it connects and the version check is not enforced!!

Ramzi Fakhri

After a whole day of trying to update with DIAL UP – All my messages and contacts are gone. They were there for safekeeping. Just when I thought I could trust the messenger program this happens.

Time to look alsewhere. Anyone out there that can recommend a GOOD email service?

penguin

I hate the new 2009 version of live it is stupid its showing that I have invatations what are not even there. I did not like being forced to change to this version its pants. its no where near as easy to work your way round as the 8.1 version I hate it Im switching to yahoo untill they get the bugs sorted or bring out a newer version.

keith

2009 Version sucks.
At first it looks cool, with the new features and I like the ability to send pictures via the chat window and the different themes,
BUT I keep getting disconnected,
AND suddenly the voice quality is terrible for me,
AND now after 2 weeks WLM does not recognize my webcam.

Don’t bother to upgrade until they fix these issues, MAJOR HEADACHE

ludwig

all my friends are gone, i leave msn and go to yahoo. the new msn is useless without existing friends and the impossible to add friends. goodbye msn for ever

jesterking

This is so stupid… Now I have to update all my clients msn in order to use it. I understand they want to get ad revenue, but give me a break. Don’t make is so obvious that that is the motivating factor here. I’ll stick with Pidgin, because the Crappy MSN frontend is too bloated and has too much advertising. Thanks again Microsoft. You have failed your users.

Ryan

For anyone who wants to use an older version of Windows Live Messenger (8.1, 8.5), if your running Windows XP (not sure about Vista), all you have to do is go to the directory of messenger and right click on the “msnmsgr.exe” file and click Properties. Then click on the Compatibility tab. Tick the “Run this program in compatibility mode for” check box and select Windows 2000 from the list. Click OK. Then launch messenger. A repair box will come up, and when that goes, you will not be forced to upgrade and you can log in again.

Ivan

Thanks Ryan that really worked out, i was using some exe modifications but got stuck and searched for another solutions and got to this blog and found what i was looking for and now i can use my old 8.1 again.

Nevena

Hello Ryan :) Thanks for this… I just have one more problem… error code 8100030d… help! :)
